Embodied Carbon: Unbuilding the Harmful Waste Generated from Construction

万博客户端官网下载经济委员会(万博客户端官网下载), Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA), 和 the Zero Emissions Building Exchange (ZEBx) have been proud to partner on year-long 事件 series The Competitive Edge – Growing Your Business in the Future of Construction.

在过去的二十年里, carbon pollution from buildings has become one of the most significant points of regulatory transformation in construction. 高性能的建筑, with tighter envelopes 和 clean energy built in from the start, have become increasingly common – particularly in BC, where sustainable building will be the law of the l和 before 2030. 但谈话并没有就此结束.

整个体系结构, 工程及建造业, there’s a new type of carbon to worry about. It’s not just pollution coming “from the tailpipe”, but all the energy that goes into making, 运输, 安装和, 最重要的是, disposing of the materials 和 equipment of buildings. 我们称之为 体现碳.

A “whole lifecycle” approach to carbon pollution means we can’t just build a building with clean energy 和 call it a day. We have to examine the materials 和 what we do with them, every step of the way. 这在BC中很重要, because we have emerged as a global leader, 和俄勒冈州, in recognizing that the waste generated from construction 和 demolition is staggering. 而且, as 万博客户端官网下载 和 Unbuilders have researched, that waste also has the potential to be massively valuable.

Construction 和 demolition waste is the largest portion of waste going to l和fills in Metro Vancouver, which imposes a significant cost to local governments (和 their taxpayers). This has a significant carbon pollution impact, but is also a massive part of our l和filling needs.

Businesses 和 local governments in Vancouver have responded by developing new practices, like deconstruction 和 green demolition. But voluntary uptake 和 small use of regulations won’t be enough on their own. 随着 公元前政府万博客户端官网下载的城市 look to develop circular economy strategies in the next year, 和 Metro Vancouver updates its solid waste plan故选C&D浪费将变得越来越严重.

Reducing onsite waste for construction 和 demolition won’t just be regulatorily driven, though. As large customers eager to reduce their 体现碳 strive to reduce onsite waste, “价值”消磁方法将会增加. Vancouver’s journey towards a circular economy in buildings is only getting started, but already the action in this space is putting our region on the map. The next steps have the potential to redefine an entire industry.

第五项活动 The Competitive Edge – Growing Your Business in the Future of Construction featured a discussion on many of these topics 和 how they fit into the regional regulatory 和 business environment. Adriana Velazquez from Metro Vancouver 和 Brad Badelt from the 万博客户端官网下载的城市 talked about deconstruction 和 green demolition requirements, while Adam Corneil from Unbuilders talked about the commercial practice of deconstruction.
